Maths Week Scotland Training for Numeracy Tutors

Professional Learning Opportunities for Adult Learning and Family Learning Tutors

To celebrate Maths Week Scotland this year Learning Link Scotland and Glasgow Science Centre are working together to bring you two opportunities for professional learning on Tuesday 27th and Thursday 29th September 2022.

On Tuesday 27th September we welcome As Creatives

The Beauty of Maths? It’s Everywhere!

How can we engage learners in maths and support them in realising their skills? This lively, interactive and experiential session will explore that vital question, starting from the premise that, when you stop to think about it, we do maths right throughout the day, without ever realising it. The day will cover three broad areas …

  • Engagement … what do we mean by “engagement” – and why is it valuable? How can we recognise engagement in learners – and in ourselves?
  • The Role of Games … how can games provide a hook for learning – and set the tone for active participation?
  • Immersive Learning … how can the creation of “fictional worlds” secure engagement … and provide a springboard for more formal – yet more effective – learning?
  • The Beauty of Maths? It’s Everywhere! … how can we support our learners in consciously practising their maths skills, even when they’re not in the classroom?

The day will be delivered by Jackson Kavanagh, a director of As Creatives. Since 2008, As Creatives’ creative maths workshops have been experienced by well over half a million learners – and the company has been bringing workshops to Maths Week Scotland since the celebration was first launched in 2017.

On Thursday 29th we welcome Maths on Toast

This year Maths on Toast will deliver a face to face workshop on the theme of ‘The Beauty of Maths’, looking at perceptions of what maths is and where we find it in our everyday lives and exploring the crucial role that hands-on, creative maths and the space and time to ‘play’ with mathematical ideas has in maths learning and numeracy.

Maths on Toast’s mission is to enable everyone to enjoy and feel positive about maths. Creating fun and enjoyable experiences of maths is an important step to building a confident and can-do attitude.

These workshops are for practitioners who would like to feel more confident delivering adult and family numeracy sessions and will look at ways of engaging learners with numeracy as well as resource development.
